Description
Although altered, this two-story residence retains many elements
of its Craftsman design. The wood frame structure is sidegabled,
with exposed beams and latticed vents in the gable ends.
Shingles sheathe the upper story while the lower is clad in
alternating courses of narrow and.wide clapboard. A shed roof on
brackets marks a small porch and entry at the north end of the
facade. The doorway is flanked by sidelights. An extension of
the second story on the south end of the facade may mark an
addition or the remodeling of a porte cochere or balcony, Both
the staircase up to this section and its fenestration are not
original. Most of the upper story windows on the facade have
also been replaced. he-iower 1e;el openings, a band of four
casements in the south half of the facade, appear to be original
in proportions if not glazing.
Lot 200 of the Ontario Colony on which this house is located was
purchased in 1910-11 by Leavenworth Wheeler. Early in 1912 the
Los Anueles Builder and Contractor printed a series of notices
charting the progress of the house. The first on February 8,
1912, noted:
"Architect Homer W. Glidden...is preparing plans for a
two-story and basement seven room frame residence to be
erected at Upland for Leavenworth Wheeler. It will
have concrete foundation and basement, rustic exterior,
shingle roof, Oregon pine and white enamel interior
finish, hardwood floors, mantel, bath, plumbing,
furnace and solar heater."
On the north elevation, a one-story wing is topped by a balcony.
The house is in fairly good condition, accessed via a cobblestone
bridge over the Euclid Avenue gutter.
A second item calling for construction bids revised the
description to include mahogany interiors and oak and maple
floors. Contracts were awarded to the Dederich Hardware Company
of Ontario (plumbing), Granger-Hall Company of Upland (electric
work) , and the Sikes-Manker Company (painting) . Elliot and
Wisely of Upland were the general contractors. A rancher,
Wheeler was assessed through 1922. In 1923 Edna C. Wheeler sold
the property to Frank J. Holmes, also a rancher. The house is
significant as an original grove house on Euclid Avenue and for
its association with architect Homer Glidden. Glidden was
responsible for a series of homes in Upland and most importantly,
for the design of the Upland public library.
