Description
The influence of the English Arts and Crafts tradition is
reflected in this two-story Craftsman home. Stucco-clad, the
wood frame structure is capped by bellcast gables. Bargeboards
and rafters have rounded ends and are exposed as triangular
braces in the eaves. Horizontal slats provide venting in the
gable ends. The entry is offset below a gabled dormer. Multipaned
casement windows are clustered about the exterior. Notable
features include a corbeled second floor bay, corbeled window
boxes and a tall stucco chimney on the facade. Other details are
hidden by the lush mature landscaping. Other than a small
addition, the house appears to be intact and in good condition.
This house occupies a portion of lot 172 of the Ontario Colony.
Along with two adjacent ten acre lots it was formerly owned by
Colonel James and Francis M. Paul. In 1917-18 this house and a
grove were added to the land which became the property of their
son, Earl Wheeler Paul as of 1917. An orange grower like his
father and most of his neighbors, Earl Paul also followed his
father's footsteps by assuming the presidency of the Commercial
National Bank. Paul lived in this house with his wife Nellie
until 1925 when he built 2009 N. Euclid for his family. This
property was sold to Edmund Mackie. Paul pursued his career in
the financial world, and his later positions included the vicepresidencies
of the Security Bank and Trust and the Bank of
America. This house is significant for its association with him,
with the development of Euclid Avenue, and for its architectural
quality and integrity.
