Description
This one-story turn-of-the-century cottage is crowned by a hipped roof with a gable over the south bay of the primary facade and a hipped dormer over a three-sided bay on the south elevation. An extension of the roof extends across the facade on turned wood posts, topping an open porch. The double-hung sash windows disposed around the exterior are visually connected by a continuous sill. The cottage is sheathed with medium clapboard above the sill, narrow clapboard below, and fishscale shingles on the gable face. The window to the right (south) of the offset entry is embellished by a transom with tracery. Other features include a boxed cornice, cobblestone foundation, plain friezeboard, and endboards. Alterations include a screen door and window shutters and are minor in nature. The house is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record is fairly straightforward about this lot. It was unimproved in 1901-02 when Guy Bodenhamer was the owner while a $300 improvement was charted in 1903 when L.P. Facie was assessed. Following a year's ownership by C.W. Bates, S.G. McClelland acquired the property (1906-15). The 1907 teamster identifies McClelland, at this location, as a teamster; in 1909 he is called a rancher. Mary E. McClelland is assessed beginning in 1916.
