Description
One of the oldest houses in the neighborhood, this is a onestory,
Queen Anne cottage. An L-shaped front and side gabled
roof defines the building plan. The front gable, faced partially
with fishscale shingles, caps a projecting three-sided bay. Tall
and narrow double-hung sash windows with curved aprons are
located in the bay. Tiny fan-shaped brackets mark the gable
overhang. The porch is located in the void of the "LW and is
defined by a pent roof on plain posts which extends in front of
the bay. A pair of double-hung sash windows are located at the
south end of the porch while the entry is at the north end. The
house, which is sided with clapboard, sits on a cobblestone
foundation. It is in fairly good condition, with facade
alterations limited to the porch.
This house is notable as an example of the late 19th century
Queen Anne style. Located near the Sante Fe tracks in the Tucker
and Anderson Subdivision, the house predates the recording of the
tract in 1907. Based on its typical Queen Anne features,
including an L-shaped facade, three-sided bay, vestigial
woodwork, and narrowly proportioned windows, it is estimated that
the house dates to c. 1898. Prior to subdivision all of lot 609
was owned by the Ontario Investment Company. Afterwards this lot
passed through the hands of W.E. Williamson (1908), A.R.
Burkholder (1909), Harry S. Fies (1910-20) and Jacob Hestenreder
(from 1921). Fies was listed in the 1916-17 directory at this
location; he was a foreman at the Lemon Growers Exchange.
