Description
This two-story American Foursquare is distinguished by an attached porch with a cobblestone wall which spans the street facade. The wall dips between four pedestals and is topped by cement coping. A semicircular opening allows for drainage. Three tapered posts sit on the pedestals, dividing the facade into two bays and carrying a pent porch roof. Four steps bordered by stone rails lead to the entry, which is towards the center of the right (east) bay. Double-hung sash windows are spaced unequal distances from each side of the door. Another pair of windows are similarly located on the upper story. Capped by a hipped roof with a boxed cornice and plain friezeboard, the clapboard structure is trimmed with endboards. Minor alterations include the addition of window shutters, a six-panel door and the painting of the stonework. The house is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: J.M. Harnish improved this property in 1914-15, according to the assessment record. However, an Ontario building permit indicated that J.M. Harnish was building an $800 residence, "two west of Euclidl1 in March 1911. This earlier date is supported by the directories, which show J.M. Harnish and Lillian Harnish, a clerk at the E.A. Bowen Co. residing on Vernon Drive from 1912-13. In 1914 Lillian was a clerk at the J.J Atwood Company. The 1916-17 directory lists the family on Vernon Drive, one west of Euclid as consisting of Jacob M. Harnish, building contractor; Lillian Harnish, clerk; and Earl and Dewey Harnish. In the 1920s the address of the Harnish family was 118 Vernon, which was probably the Ontario number for this house.
