Description

This turn-of-the-century cottage is largely enveloped by foliage. It is one-story and capped by a hipped roof. Medium horizontal siding is trimmed by endboards. A porch is recessed on the north half of the facade, its outside corner is marked by a Tuscan column. The entry is oriented perpendicular to the street; the only other opening to the porch is a single double-hung sash window on the rear wall. In the south bay, a large opening appears to have been re-glazed. In fairly good condition, the residence is mostly unaltered. RESEARCH NOTES: Assessment amounts for this parcel were not recorded until 1915. The house was on the property by 1912 according to the Sanborn map, but pre-dates that year stylistically. The ownership history of the parcel indicates that T.H. Herrett succeeded the Magnolia Land and Water Company in 1902 and that Eva E. Judd followed Herrett in 1906. Neither Herrett nor Judd appear in the city directories until 1909-10 when Mrs. Judd resides on the east side of Second Avenue in the first house north of F Street. Rose Musser owned the property between 1911 and 1918 but apparently did not live there and John and Mary Stauffer bought it in 1919.
