Description
occupying a large parcel at the corner of Sultana and the Santa Fe right-of-way, this one and two-story packing house illustrates the aesthetic appeal of utilitarian construction. The concrete frame is filled in with panels of variegated brick. A cobblestone foundation supports the structure. Cobblestone also sheathes a small, detached shed near the south end of the Sultana elevation. Paneled doors are set into the bays along receiving docks. At the southwest corner of the building, a two-story office wing is flatroofed, banded by a paneled frieze, and retains some of the original eight-over-one sash. These windows, as well as an arch which faces west, are outlined by raised bricks. Mansard-like roofs top other portions of the structure. Alterations include the enclosure of some openings and the addition of a one-story, shed-roofed wing along the north half of the Sultana elevation. RESEARCH NOTES: This impressive structure is the oldest remaining component of the former Upland Lemon Growers Association complex. organized in 1893 as the Lemon Growers Exchange, the association, headed in C.E. Harwood, became one of the most important in the region. At one time it was said to operate the largest packing plant of its kind: this building and the one north of the tracks which are said to be connected by an underground conveyor system. The Sultana building was erected in 1920 at a cost of $100,000.
