Description
the north side of A Street, this is a poured concrete warehouse and packing house. A barrel vaulted roof covers the south end of the structure. Its western end contains three large industrial sash windows whose segmented heads conform to the same arch as the roofline. Raised piers divide this elevation into five bays while over twenty bays are defined on the south elevation. ~eceiving bays, variously filled with paneled or corrugated doors, are located along each side of the building. It is still in use as a fruit processing plant. RESEARCH NOTES: This massive facility was erected by the Upland Lemon Growers ~ssociation in 1932-34. It was located on the site of the former North Ontario packing house. Built in two stages, the total cost for the new plant was $225,000, plus equipment and air-conditioning worth another $75,000. This large investment represented the second phase of an expansion begun in 1920 with the construction of the packing house south of the tracks on Sultana and concluded around 1935 with the erection of the administration offices on the south side of A at Fourth. The entire complex was sold to Blue Goose Growers, one of the major suppliers to Sunkist, in 1983.
