Description
This former packing house consists of a large warehouse space with a two-story office wing attached to its west (Third Avenue) elevation. The office is clothed in the Spanish style with stuccoed exteriors and a tiled hip roof. Seven bays are defined by the fenestration. Above very small openings on the first floor the second story windows are large metal casements. Raised sills detail the windows. Narrow pilasters and an entablature frame the entry in the central bay. It is topped by a pair of slit-like windows with decorative grilles. Tiled hoods protect entries to the warehouse space north and south of the office wing; otherwise it is purely utilitarian in design. Some changes, such as the enclosure of openings, were noted. The building presently has retail tenants, no doubt occasioning certain other alterations. RESEARCH NOTES: The lots that comprise this parcel have been associated with the citrus industry practically since assessment records began being kept in 1895. Originally the property was part of the Harwood Brothers' holdings. Already in 1895 the Lemon Growers Exchange had a facility on part of the parcel. By 1896 the Ontario Warehouse Company had an improvement on another section. The Upland Citrus Association replaced the Ontario Warehouse Company as assessee in 1901, and the Lemon Growers Exchange in 1907. In 1926 a large increase in the improvement assessment probably indicates that the construction of the present building had taken place over the prior year. This Upland Citrus Association plant was one of the fourteen packing houses of the Ontario Cucamonga Fruit Exchange. It was pictured in the 1932 fiftieth anniversary edition of the Daily Report.
