Description
This two-story Craftsman residence is a good example of the socalled Itairplane bungalow." Its front-gabled second story is smaller than the first and is set back like a cockpit, while the low-pitched gables of the lower story stretch out like wings. The roof treatment includes braced bargeboards, exposed rafters, vertical venting, and a gablet centered over the first floor below the second story. Elephantine piers on pedestals frame the front porch. On the lower story lap siding of different heights emphasizes the horizontality of the design; the upper level is sheathed with shingles. Three pairs of casements with slightly extended lintels occupy the upper facade. Another three openings, a door with a wood-framed screen flanked by large windows, overlook the porch. The porch supports and wall may have been altered, but the design of the house is largely intact. The property is enhanced by its landscaping and is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: William H. Tuttle built this house in 1914-15, according to the assessment record. Tuttle, who would later build across the street at 117, was listed as residing on West 10th and Mountain in the 1914 directory. He was an orange grower.
