Description

The Monterey Revival was the style of choice for the two-story, former packing house. Now used as offices for a public storage facility added to the rear, the original building is of brick construction. A tiled, side gable roof caps the structure. Spanning the southern three-quarters of the facade, a Monterey style balcony is set on extended beams with shaped ends. Plain posts and a stick railing enclosed the space, which is shaded by the overhang of the gable. Exposed rafters echo the treatment of the beams supporting the balcony. Paired casements framed by wood shutters are arranged on the lower story facade. An entry at the head of a short flight of brick steps has had its door replaced. Widely spaced double-hung sash windows open onto the balcony. All of the windows have fairly deep reveals. Neatly landscaped, the building appears intact on the facade, the addition visible from the sides. It is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: "One of the outstanding architectural attractions on Euclid Avenue" claimed the Upland News not long after this building was erected. Built in 1929, the building was the packing house of the Upland Cooperative Groves, an affiliate of the Mutual Orange Distributors. As the aforementioned newspaper article stated, it was one of the most unusual buildings of its type, eschewing the usually more utilitarian approach to industrial construction for the most upto- date style of the time, and was "regarded as one of the 'showplaces' in the community." It was renovated in 1984 after it had ceased functioning as a packing house, a reflection of the revised post-war identity of Upland in which citrus production was no longer dominant.
