Description

The La Verne Co-op Citrus Association complex includes a one-story office building and a large warehouse/packing house facility in the interior of the block. Of block construction, the office building is flat-roofed and influenced by the Art Deco/Moderne style. The facade consists of three bays with a central entrance flanked by metal casement windows. Stepped jambs and a horizontal canopy lend a Moderne accent to the entry. A shallow step back is observed at the roofline. The warehouse is a large, barrel vaulted structure lined by receiving docks, supply yards and other utilitarian spaces. It appears to be sheathed with stucco. The primary feature of architectural interest are three large industrial sash windows whose segmental heads which describe the same arch as the roof. The entire property is still in use at a citrus production plant. RESEARCH NOTES: Judging by the architectural character of the office and warehouse, the present facility dates to around 1935. It may have been associated with the Mountain View Warehouse Company prior to that time. Also, somewhere in the vicinity of Second and Stowell W.C. Scheu developed and manufactured the most widely used orchard heaters in the area.
