Description
Cubic volumes coupled with the standard Spanish characteristics of stucco siding and tile roofing distinguish this two-story residence. The tile appears both as coping for the flat roofs of the primary volume and on the pent roofs which shade windows to either side of a central entrance. Four casements nestle under the left (west) hood while a tripartite window occupies the slightly recessed wall right of the entry. The door itself is set within a deep archway. Behind the front rooms, the house rises two stories. A balcony is visible; other features are hidden by suitably tropical vegetation. Triangular vents composed of circular clay pipes dot the facade. No major alterations were noted. The house is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Walter and Goldie Horah purchased this property from George and Etta West in 1924. Previously it was part of a large section of lot 566 of the Ontario Colony and was planted with vines and trees assessed at $1125. In 1925 the Horahs were assessed for a $1700 improvement on their portion of the lot. The 1924 directory had listed Walter Horah; a salesman with the Empire Realty Co., and his wife Goldie on East 9th. Their new address in 1926 was 290 W. loth, which is probably the Ontario number for this house.
