Description
The carved braces and front gable roof of this two-story Craftsman home are reminiscent of a Swiss Chalet. Another gable, oriented to the sides, separate the upper and lower stories. Two tripartite windows and a double latticed vent pierce the upper story facade. The lower story also has two openings, the entrance set behind a third gable on the west end of the facade, and a pair of casement doors flanked by three-quarter sidelights at the opposite end. Both lower story openings overlook a porch which is nestled beneath the overhang of the side gable. Battered cobblestone piers topped by tapered posts define the porch space. The house sits on a cobblestone foundation and has a clapboarded exterior. It is unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Since this property was part of a much larger one at least into the 1920s, it cannot be said with certainty that the $1200 improvement noted in the 1914 assessment corresponds to this house. At that time all 10 acres of lot 565 (of which this is part) were owned by William D. Clark. Apparently Clark, who gained title to the property in 1911-12, planted an orchard in 1918-19. Previous owners of lot 565 included C.C. Burkholder (1908-ll), the Euclid Fruit Co. (1907), and Joseph Dundas (1900- 1907), who also was assessed for trees and vines.
