Description
Art Deco in the guise of the PWA Moderne and Spanish style are
combined to good effect in this one-story professional building.
Fluted piers divide the smoothly rusticated concrete block
exterior into bays. Reeded moldings band the top and bottom of
the bays. At the top, vents are centered between the flat pier
capitals. Above a shallow step back a nearly flat hip roof of
clay tile caps the structure. Below the lower molding the piers
sit on a slightly raised base. The entry is located in the
fourth bay from the east on a slightly raised base. The entry is
located in the fourth bay from the east on the primary (south)
elevation. Both the door and the windows set into the recessed
bays have been replaced. No other major alterations, other than
a handicap access ramp, were observed. The building is in good
condition.
Located at the south end of the commercial district and across
the street from the train station this centrally-sited office
building was erected in 1936-37 for the Ontario-Cucamonga Fruit
Exchange. It apparently replaced an earlier office at the same
place, as previous directories list the O.K. Fruit Exchange at
102 N. Second Avenue. Organized in 1893, the O.K. Fruit Exchange
was the selling agent for several of the packing houses in the
area. For the majority of its early years, Charles E. Harwood
was its president; he was succeeded by William Rohrig. This
building is significant for its association with the highly
influential O.K. Fruit Exchange and for its architectural
quality. Next to the 1939 city hall building it is the best
example of PWA Moderne in Upland.
