Description
This one-and-a-half story home is distinguished by a tile roof. Otherwise, its features are typically Craftsman. The roof is side gabled, with an extension of shallower pitch over a nowenclosed porch on the east two-thirds of the facade. Capped by a finial, a front gable dormer contains two pairs of windows. Elaborately shaped braces and notched rafter details punctuate the eaves. Narrow clapboard sheathes the building, which rests on a stone foundation. Cobblestone piers also define the three bays of the former porch. A broad window occupies the westernmost bay of the facade. All of the windows feature bands of small square lights across the top. In good condition, the building is accented by a palm and other landscaping. RESEARCH NOTES : Like other parcels carved out of the 10 acre lots of the Ontario Colony, this property has a difficult history to pin down. In the late 1930s the house was owned and lived in by Wayne and Margaret Morse who were orange growers. They were assessed for $2610 of trees and vines on the property. From at least 1918 until 1930 Alice and Miles Harnley, also ranchers with a trees and vines assessment, owned and lived in the house, then identified as 307 West 10th. Between 1909 and 1913, lot 584, of which this is a part, was owned by the Euclid Fruit Company and Josiah Dundas. No record could be found for the years 1914-18. Probably this grove house was built sometime around 1915.
