Description
A side gable roof with a large central shed dormer occupied by a band of windows dominates this one-and-one-half-story Craftsman residence. Extended eaves, exposed rafters, and shaped brackets embellish the roofline. Three steps with cobblestone rails lead to a porch recessed into the north two-thirds of the facade. The porch is defined by three wood posts on a low cobblestone wall. A centrally located door and a tripartite window open onto the porch. Another large window, set above the cobblestone wall on the south side of the facade, suggests that the porch once spanned the full length of the facade. Alterations include asphalt shingling and reglazing. The residence is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was probably built circa 1910-11; it was shown in the 1912 Sanborn. On May 17, 1910, the Los Anseles Builder and Contractor printed the following notice: "Residence - Upland. P.E. Walline of Upland is planning the erection of a residence to cost $3000. It will contain seven rooms and will be up-to-date in every respect." In October 1911 a building permit for a bungalow to cost $3000 to be built on North Laurel near Ninth listed P.E. Walline as the owner. The assessment record shows Walline as the owner of this lot, from the time of subdivision in 1907 through 1919. Walline was one of the subdividers of this tract, known as the Leeke and Walline Subdivision. The lot was acquired by Bess R. Jones in 1920.
