Description
A combination of textures enhances the appearance of this onestory Craftsman bungalow. A gabled roof set perpendicular to the street caps the dwelling and extends over the full front porch. The roof is detailed with extended eaves, triangular brackets, exposed beams and rafters, and a gablet over a bay on the south elevation. In the gable face, bands of diamond-shaped lattice venting, fishscale shingles, and conventional shingles provide a decorative focus. The remainder of the structure is sheathed with clapboards, finished with endboards, and sits on a stone foundation. A stone chimney rises above the ridgeline. Four tapered wood posts and a stick railing define the porch. The central entrance is flanked by 111 double-hung sash windows. Set behind a picket fence, the bungalow is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : Walline, Atwood and Leeke, the subdividers, owned this property through 1911. The house is shown on the 1912 Sanborn (as "42211), indicating that Jennie Olsen, the owner in 1912-13, probably built the house. Improvement assessments ranging from $200 to $400 were recorded between 1914 and 1918 when J.P. and B.C. Peterson owned the lot. W.L. and Bertha Waterman purchased in 1919. The 1919-20 directory listed W.L. Waterman, mechanic, and Bertha Waterman as residing on East 9th.
