Description
The use of cobblestone distinguishes this one-and-one-half story Craftsman bungalow as it does many others in Upland. A side gable roof caps the structure with a large, front-gabled dormer centered over the facade. Notched rafters and bargeboards detail the eaves. The dormer is shingle-clad beneath a latticed vent and contains a pair of diamond-paned casement windows which open onto a small, sunken balcony. Spanning the facade, a recessed porch is defined by cobblestone piers and wall. Paired timbers atop the columns act as capitals. Beneath an extension of the side gable roof, the porch continues on the east elevation. The entry is offset to the east and is flanked by large tripartite windows with decorative paning. A cobblestone chimney rises up the west elevation. Narrow clapboard sheathes the house, which is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : The Colborn family seems to have been associated with both this property and the one next door to the west. In 1909-10 George Colborn, a packing house foreman lived on the south side of Tenth in the sixth house east of Third Avenue. From 1911 to 1913 Colborn was associated with Curran and Co. and lived in the 4th house east of Third. He became the proprietor of the Upland City Market in 1914, according to the directories, then in 1919-20 was listed as the foreman of Peppers and Masten, living with his wife Lyde. J.J. and Clara Strieby were the new owners in 1928.
