Description
This one-story, turn-of-the-century cottage reflects its Queen Anne heritage in the design and detailing of the roof. The predominately hipped roof flares out over a porch which spans the south two-thirds of the primary facade; the north third is capped by a gablet covered with fishscale shingles and pierced by a tripartite vent. Fenestration consists of a door in the porch next to the bay and a one-over-one double-hung sash window centered on the bay. (Other fenestration under the porch is screened by a blind.) Below the boxed cornice and friezeboard the clapboarded structure is trimmed with endboards and rests on a stone foundation. The cottage appears to be intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record narrows the period of construction for this house to the years between 1899 when no improvement was documented and 1903 when a $300 improvement appeared. Since the first owner after the Magnolia Land and Water Company was Caroline L. Schletzer, one possible scenario is that she was responsible for the building. It changed hands several times until an owner can be pinpointed living there (W.F. Rabe 1902-05; H.M. Johnson 1906; Charles Harwood 1907; and W.L. Brown 1908). Mrs. J.B. Sprague was assessed from 1909 onwards several years and apparently lived in the house for several years.
