Description
Several features characteristic of the turn of the century can still be seen on this remodeled, one-story residence. A hipped roof caps the structure, accented by a closed front gable over the west half of the facade. Fishscale shingle siding and a vent with a decoratively patterned, jig-sawn surround appear in the gable face. Boxed cornices and a friezeboard separate the roof from the horizontal siding on the building. Narrow clapboards sheathe the structure below a continuous sill. A large window with a diamond-paned transom is centered beneath the gable. On the east half of the facade, a recessed porch has been enclosed. The entry, a paneled and glazed door, is original. Not original, however, is the large brick chimney on the west elevation. A single palm tree in the front lawn complements the house, which is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house originally occupied a parcel with twice the frontage as currently, the last half was sold in 1914. The earliest assessment for the parcel which was located was in 1906-07 when A. Nelson was the owner. According to the 1907 directory, Nelson did live on "E" and was a shoemaker on Second Avenue. In 1908 Nancy and Fannie Brillanger became the owners of the property.
