Description
The view of this one-story turn-of-the-century cottage is somewhat obscured by leafy trees in its front yard. The facade is L-shaped, with an L-shaped porch tucked into the void and wrapping the northeast corner. A front gable, outlined by a molded raking cornice with horizontal returns, tops the projecting wing of the structure. The porch roof is supported by columns resting on a low, cobblestone wall. Within the space the entry is oriented perpendicular to the street. Visible fenestration includes a small window set high on the wall at the back of the porch and an eight-over-eight double-hung sash window with a transom and shutters which is centered below the gable. Now used as an office, the building has been altered. It is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was erected between 1901, when a $50 assessment on Land only was recorded, and 1907, when the house appeared on the Sanborn map. From 1902 the owner was Harry L. Nafius, a carpenter. Most probably he built the house. In 1903 a $50 improvement assessment was made, rather a low amount for a house. Perhaps the present residence grew in stages or was preceded by a smaller building. By 1907 Nafius was in residence; later directories also list his wife Frances, known as Fannie.
