Description

This simple Craftsman bungalow is sheathed with alternating narrow and medium clapboard and covered by a gabled roof set parallel to the street. The roof projects over an open front porch and is supported by thick wood posts on heavy stone bases. An extension of the roof to the north and a pergola behind it shade the entry to the porch. A three-step rise in elevation defines the space, which is unenclosed. Roof details include narrow vertical slats in the gable faces and extended eaves. Double-hung sash windows are singly and doubly disposed about the exterior. The bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Both the assessment record and the Sanborns indicate that the present house is either the second on the property or a substantial remodel. In 1922 the improvement on the property was assessed at $125. A year later, the new owners, William and Mary Jane Campbell, were assessed $575. The Sanborns illustrate a house with a different footprint in 1912. It would seem that either the Campbells or the previous owners, the stockings, were responsible for the construction. William Campbell was an oil worker while Charles Stocking was a machinist and car mechanic. Earlier owners who had lived in the house included Jesse Sheets, a carpenter (1912-13) and Carrie E. Hunter (1910-11).
