Description
A good example of turn-of-the-century characteristics, this is a one-story dwelling set beneath a bellcast hip roof. Another hip tops a projecting wing at the north end of the facade. An Lshaped porch abuts the wing and wraps the southwest corner of the building. Tuscan columns and an elevation of three steps define the space. Below a boxed cornice and friezeboard the structure is clothed with narrow clapboards and ringed by a stringcourse at sill level. It sits on a cobblestone foundation. Two entries, perpendicular to each other, open onto the porch. Windows to the south of the entry and centered on the projecting wing have decoratively paned upper sashes. Substantially unaltered, the house is in fair condition. RESEARCH NOTES: G.A. Cable, an electrician, bought this property from the Magnolia Land and Water Company around 1902-1903. An improvement was first assessed in 1903. Cable lived there until he sold the house to Ernest Dart, a yardman at the Atwood-Blakeslee Lumber yard, in 1907-08. Following a year's ownership by Annie E. Baxter (1911), the house passed to William 0. Chaffee (1912-19), May H. Chaffee (1919-23) and Pleasant K. and Ethel M. Thomas (from 1923). Other residents of 442 Second, according to the directories, have included James J. Doherty, a baker at the Boston Bakery (1912-13), Edwin McGinty, also a baker (1912-13), and Amy F. Frost, an agent, in 1924.
