Description
A symmetrical, turn-of-the-century design marks this one-and-ahalf story residence. A complex roof, consisting of a primary hip, a pent hip over the attached porch, a central gabled dormer, and cross gables on the north and south elevations, caps the clapboarded structure. Enclosed soffits emphasize the horizontal lines of the cornice. A pair of double-hung sash windows with a continuous molded lintel fill the dormer. Above the sided porch wall, the porch has been enclosed with windows, leaving a central, recessed entry. The mostly glazed opening is framed similarly to the dormer. Cobblestones were used for the foundation, the pedestals flanking the four steps up to the porch, and for a curb wall which borders the front lawn. In good condition, the house appears to be intact other than the porch. RESEARCH NOTES: This property changed hands many times during its early history and identification of its date of construction and original owner are conjectural. No improvement was assessed on the property in 1903 when it was owned by Minnie Ruedy. Assessment amounts from 1904 until 1915 when a $450 improvement is shown are not available. A.J. Craig was assessed for the property in 1907, John Toothiman 1908-11 and D.H. Bert from 1912 to 1918. Then, in quick succession, Letta Shemood (1918), P.J. Wiebe (1920) and George Brown (1921) recorded deeds. The earliest directory notation found was for Toothman (sic), J., retired and Toothman (sic), Myrtle, Miss on the west side of Second Avenue in the second house north of F Street in 1909-10. Jessie Brown was the principal of the Fannie D. Noe/Upland Elementary School.
