Description
An umbrella of trees and shrubs shield much of this one-story, turn-of-the-century residence from view. Sheathed with narrow clapboards, the cottage has a hipped roof with a boxed cornice set on a plain frieze. At the south end of the facade, a front gable on slender Tuscan columns establishes the perimeter of an elevated porch. Windows with narrow, four light upper sashes are located to both sides of the door. Erected on a cobblestone foundation, the house is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : From 1906 until 1913 Melissa Johnson was the assessed owner of this parcel. A.H. Johnson's name appears after 1914. As early as 1907 Arthur H. Johnson lived on Third in the house south of E (Arrow). This description matches the location of this house on the 1907 Sanborn. Johnson was a grocer, variously associated over the years with the firms Johnson and Cooley (1907), Johnson and Brown (1909-1928) and Johnson and Gibson (1937-38). He also served as a member of the City Board of Trustees in the 1910s and 1920s and as a city councilman in the 1930s. Johnson was the mayor of the City of Upland for several terms, 1918-22 and 1924- 26.
