Description
This beautifully preserved example of turn-of-the-century styling is one-story, hip-roofed, and clapboard-sided. Two similarly detailed gables face front: a central gablet and a closed gable over the projecting south bay of the facade. Each is sheathed with fishscale shingles and pierced by a round vent sawn in a snowflake pattern. A dentil-like molding embellishes the horizontal and raking cornices of the south gable. North of the projecting wing, a porch is defined by a low cobblestone wall and turned wood columns. Two entries, set perpendicular to each other, and a tall, double-hung sash window open onto the space. Centered in the south wing, another window has a transom-like upper sash with decorative paning. The house, which sits on a cobblestone foundation, is substantially unaltered and in good condition. It is shaded by mature trees growing in a modest setback. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record indicates that this house was erected in 1899-1900 by William Leonard. In 1906-08 the assessed owner became Mrs. Alice Leonard, then from 1909 until the early 1920s M. Alice Ward was the title holder. The Hickok family were residents in the 1920s, including L.N. or Berton, a laborer, and his wife Lurah. Long-time residents also recall this as the home of gas station owner Harold Rowe.
