Description
This one-and-one-half-story dwelling combines a simplified Queen Anne vocabulary with stylistic touches from the Craftsman era. Intersecting gables cap the L-shaped clapboarded building. The long leg of the "L" is one-story and capped by a side gable which is detailed with Craftsman features such as extended eaves and exposed rafters. The shorter leg of the "L" presents its Queen Anne influenced face to the street. Fishscale shingles sheathe the closed gable end which is pierced by a round vent with a snowflake pattern. A tall, double-hung sash window breaks the boxed cornice. The entrance is recessed into the center of the facade behind a cobblestone porch wall. Three doors and a oneover- one double-hung sash window opens onto the space. To the right (north) of the entrance, the facade is banded by four casement windows. A pair of windows and a small, raised bay are located to the left of the porch. In fairly good condition, the building has apparently been altered at some point early in its history. It sits on a stone foundation behind a shallow setback bordered by a low cement curb. RESEARCH NOTES: Robert Siechert, a laborer, was the owner of this lot and the ones to the north and south during the early years of the century. The 1907 Sanborn shows that this house was the first to be constructed. Siechert was listed in the directories at this location from at least 1907; after 1914 or 1915 he moved next door to 443.
