Description

Although altered, this one-story cottage still exhibits elements of vernacular styling characteristic of the turn of the century. The hipped roof gently flares out over the west and north elevations and is further enhanced by a closed, front gable capping a projecting bay on the south third of the street elevation. Similarities to other buildings in the area suggest that a veranda once wrapped around the northwest corner; today, it has been partially enclosed. The remaining portion of the veranda is now recessed into the center of the street elevation. A wood paneled door with an upper light and a double-hung sash window overlook the porch, which is detailed with turned wood posts, railing and a spindle frieze. Other fenestration includes a double-hung window centered under the gable. Board and batten siding has been applied to the front of the clapboarded structure. The house is in fair condition. RESEARCH NOTES: David B. Hilberg, Jr., acquired this lot from John L. Thornton in 1902. The 1903 assessment indicated that there was no improvement on the lot at the time. However, by 1909, Hilberg, a fruit packer, was residing at this location. It seems likely, that, given the style of the building, it was built closer to 1903 than to 1909.
