Description

This property is a remnant of an early, rural Upland. Set back behind a small citrus grove, a one-story, turn-of-the-century cottage is barely visible. It has a hipped roof, boxed eaves, denticulated frieze, and narrow clapboard siding. A porch on the south elevation appears to have been altered. No other features are discernable behind the screen of vegetation. Located in the rear of the property, a one-and-one-half story barn is set beneath a front gable roof which flares out towards either side. Vertical siding sheathes the building, which retains its loft window above the large, ground-level doors. House, barn and trees seem to be in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: With its typical, turn-of-the-century dwelling, barn, and citrus trees; this property, consisting of two parcels with a combined square footage of half an acre, is evocative of Upland around 1905. Originally the grove occupied all 10 acres of Ontario Colony lot 510, according to former neighbors. It was owned most recently by Art Rehl, and remains in the Rehl family. In the 1920s the Mussers occupied the property. They are remembered by the then-youth of the neighborhood for the cow they kept in the barn. Later the Mussers ran the Shady Grove Diary.
