Description
This one-story cottage displays many of the stylistic devices of turn-of-the-century vernacular architecture. A front facing gable pierced by a half-circle vent sits atop a clapboarded structure trimmed with endboards. A hipped roof, descending from the center of the gable face to cover a full front porch, is supported by turned wood posts with decorative brackets. Overhanging eaves and exposed rafters are used throughout the roof treatment. Fenestration is symmetrically arranged with two one-over-one double-hung sash windows separated by a wood paneled door with an oval light. Set behind a white picket fence and well landscaped yard, the cottage is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: No improvement was noted in the 1901-04 assessment to Caroline J. Schletzer. However, the next owner, Caroline H. Hoffee is noted at this location in the 1907 and 1909-10 directories. A.F. Riley, a machinist at the R & 0 Garage (1911) then the Upland Garage (1912-19), was the next assessed owner. Both the 1907 and 1912 Sanborns bore the description "cloth sides," leading to the assumption that the house, which has an identical footprint on the 1928 map, began life as a tent house.
