Description

No evidence of its original appearance remains on the facade of this one-story commercial building. Its primary features are stucco facing, apparently added to the masonry in 1948, a plain parapet, horizontal canopy, slightly recessed entry, and aluminum framed display windows. All openings have been re-glazed. RESEARCH NOTES: The available documentation suggests that this masonry building was erected between 1907 and 1912. In 1907 the Sanborn pictured an empty spot where the building now stands, with the one-andone- half story Hotel Bellevue on the rear of the lot facing the Santa Fe tracks. By 1912 a one-story brick building, 101-107- 109, had been built and housed a restaurant, tailor, and printer, respectively. The 1928 map illustrated the same structure, then occupied by an office (101) and a pool room (107-09). This usage conflicts with those mentioned in the 1924 directory, which located James Merchant, a clothes cleaner, at 107, William Nowland1s restaurant, at 103, and E. Allen's Upland Transfer (nAuto Trucking and General Haulingw) at 109. The owners of the building during the assumed period of possible construction were A.G. Allen (1906-07), M.J. & M.W. Sutherland (1908), and H.C. Dewey (from 1909).
