Description
A stepped parapet is the most noticeable remnant of the original design of this one-story commercial building. The masonry building has been sheathed with stucco. Below the parapet the facade contains three storefronts. Although each has been altered and re-glazed, recessed panels in the wall above them are probably also left over from the original scheme. A $90,000 conversion of the interior to the "Second Avenue Mallw in 1988 has no doubt substantially altered the interior as well. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record for this property indicates that a $4100 improvement was assessed in 1926, following several years of no improvement values being associated with the parcel. Since the 1907 and 1912 Sanborns did show buildings on the site, it is possible that they were destroyed by the 1913 fire which devastated the east side of Second south of 9th Street. The 1928 Sanborn illustrated a one-story masonry structure at 134-144 which housed the Upland Transfer and Storage Company. Walter E. and Mamie Allen were the proprietors.
