Description

In common with most of the buildings on Second Avenue, this twostory commercial and residential building has a remodeled facade. While the masonry construction and original window openings can be seen on the rear and side elevations, the facade has been stuccoed, the four upper story windows replaced with louvered windows, and the two street level storefronts completely reglazed. A door in the center of the facade, between the storefronts, leads to the lodgings on the second floor. RESEARCH NOTES: A notice in the Builder and Contractor on September 9, 1909 states that "Arthur [sic] Zenz will erect a business building on 2nd street [sic]." The assessment record for this parcel reveals that Anton Zenz was first assessed for the property in 1910, which is compatible with the 1909 date of construction. Zenz had a confectionery in the north storefront. He also was the agent for the Camp Baldy Company. Mrs. Minnie Zenz offered furnished rooms on the second floor. In 1924 she had seven tenants, most of whom were fruit pickers or packers, according to the directories. The family also lived above the store.
