Description

This vernacular one-story cottage displays the influences of the late Queen Anne style. A front gable spans the facade and is closed by a pent roof. The gable face contains a round vent and a pair of double-hung sash windows. Behind it, the roof is hipped and side gabled. Boxed cornices detail the roofline. Plain wood posts with decorative brackets define an open porch cutaway from the northeast corner of the structure. The entrance is set perpendicular to the street within the porch. Double-hung sash windows are located in the porch and on the south half of the street facade. A continuous sill circles the structure; above the sill the building is sheathed with medium clapboard and trimmed with endboards while below the sill narrow clapboards are used. Erected on a cobblestone foundation, the cottage appears to be unaltered and in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record indicates that this property was purchased by F.H. Manker from the Harwood Brothers in 1896-97. In 1899 Manker was assessed for a $350 improvement. The 1898 directory listed Manker, a painter, in North Ontario. By approximately 1902 Manker was living at 603 N. Second Avenue. A series of owners followed, including Laura Slotter (1900-03), Adam Whipple (1901-04), S.T. Whipple (1905), A.S. Davidson (1906-ll), and Emma H. Davidson. Alonzo avids son was variously listed in the directories as a Lemon House employee (1907), a fruit packer, and a labeler.
