Description
Square in plan and capped by a hipped roof, this one-story turn- of-the-century cottage rests on a cobblestone foundation. A closed gable covers the north half of the facade. The gable face is clad with shingles while the rest of the structure is sheathed with wide clapboard, probably an alteration. Nestled into the south half of the facade, the porch is shaded by an extension of the roof. Three Tuscan columns resting on a low porch wall hold the boxed cornice and simple friezeboard of the porch roof. An off-centered door and a one-over-one double-hung sash window to the left (south) open onto the porch. An identical window is situated on the north half of the facade. The cottage is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This parcel was sold by the Magnolia Land and Water Company to Fannie Burkholder in 1905-06. The Burkholders historically are associated with the Brethren Church, located next door. Neither the Burkholders nor the subsequent assessed owners, Walter Boehm (1910-14) and Herman E. Boehm (1915-19), are listed at this address in the directories. The house was certainly on the lot by 1912 (according to the Sanborns).
