Description
Although it has been altered, this one-story cottage retains much of its late Queen Anne influenced styling. The predominately hipped roof takes on various organic outgrowths: the crest rises into a gablet; the north and east slopes take on a lower pitch over a veranda; and a front gable tops a bay on the south half of the facade. The peaks of the two gables are embellished with stickwork and a sunburst while the faces are sheathed with patterned shingles and pierced by arched vents. Double-hung sash windows are located adjacent to a door in the corner of the veranda and centered on the south bay. A continuous sill breaks the facade horizontally. Above a continuous sill the structure is clad with medium clapboard and trimmed with endboards; below the sill, narrow clapboards are used, continuing onto the balustrade around the veranda. A series of posts on the veranda wall may indicate that the space was formerly screened. An addition at the north end of the house has resulted in the enclosure of part of the porch which the 1907 Sanborn indicates was L-shaped. A one-story wing recessed on the south is also an addition. The house sits on a stone foundation and is in fair condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Charles M. Sikes purchased this property from the Harwood Brothers in 1896-97. Between 1897 and 1899 an improvement assessed at $350 in 1899 was constructed. Sikes was living at this location when the 1900 directory was issued. At that time he was a liveryman; however, he became a painter and paper hanger shortly thereafter. In partnership with former neighbor or property owner A.H. Manker, Sikes went on to become a successful businessman.
