Description

The parapet and its detailing are the only clues on the facade which point to the age of this one-story commercial building. Although the facade has been stuccoed, the parapet is still articulated as three panels, one above each opening. All of the windows and doors have been re-glazed. The south space is the smallest of the two storefronts. A large display window is located in the center, with the store entrance separated from it by a pier. Beneath the later accoutrements the building is of masonry construction. RESEARCH NOTES: ~ccording to the assessments record this property was purchased by Austin B. Chowning in 1903-04. By 1907 it had been improved with the two-story, wood frame telephone company office. The 1907 Sanborn also indicated that the building was used as the library as well. The same building was pictured on the 1912 Sanborn, although it was no longer used as the library. In 1918 the improvement assessment on the site jumped from $300 to $500. This is explained by a 1918 Upland News item which stated that the new Chowning Building was almost complete and would house the Ontario-Upland Telephone Company. Additionally, the south storefront was also rented out; in 1924 it was occupied by the Campbell Building Material Company.
