Description
Several typical elements of early 20th century commercial vernacular architecture are intact in this one-story building. Of brick construction the building has not been stuccoed or given a new front like many of its neighbors. Corbeling and a dentillike pattern define the cornice and a frieze; most likely a parapet has been removed. The entry is more or less centered and recessed. It contains a glazed door, display window and a transom above all and is only slightly altered. An opening to the north is proportioned to fit a double-hung sash window which has been removed. On the south another larger window is glazed with plate glass. Raised sills detail the openings. An aluminum awning has been added. RESEARCH NOTES: Both the 1907 and 1912 Sanborn maps illustrate the Upland Livery and Feed at this site. A.C. Sikes most likely constructed the building around 1905. This structure, however, appears to be the next generation on the property. In 1928 the Sanborn shows a one-story masonry feed and fuel facility whose footprint differs from the earlier building. Further clues are provided by the assessment record which seems to indicate a zero improvement assessment in 1918, with $1000 shown in both 1917 and 1919. According to the Town Center Walking Tour, this building burnt in 1917 and was rebuilt. However, a different date for the fire is December 1912, when the Los Anaeles Builder and Contractor reported that several buildings had been destroyed by fire. Two weeks later, on December 26, 1912, the same journal reported that "architects are preparing plans for a row of one-story brick buildings to be erected on 2nd Street [sic] for William Gosan, A.C. Sikes, Geo. W. Colborn and A.B. Neff..." Either this building dates to 1913 or to 1917.
