Description
Despite its stucco coating this one-story commercial building retains some of its historic elements. A tiled hood spans the parapet, contained between brick topped piers at each end of the structure. Three corbeled courses rise to meet the tile. Below a row of diamond shaped niches band the facade. Two spandrels complete the parapet design. The transom has been stuccoed over and a canopy suspended beneath it. No resemblance to the original design is retained by the storefront. RESEARCH NOTES: The Sanborns indicate that this building was erected sometime between 1912 and 1928. Most likely the construction occurred between 1924 and 1928. In 1924 the directories listed the Calvin Niswander grocery at 155. This use would be a likely successor to the drug store noted in a one-story wood frame structure on the site in the 1907 and 1912 Sanborns. A historic photograph from the mid 1920s shows this building as the Davis Cafe. In 1924 the Davises, Harry and Irma, operated a restaurant further up the block, at 175. A new building on the site is confirmed by the 1928 Sanborn which shows a one-story masonry structure used for a tailor (149) and telephone office (151).
