Description
A completely remodeled facade characterizes this one-story commercial building. It is stucqoed, spanned by a pent roof at the top of the parapet, and contains a front gable with pseudohalf timbering centered above the storefront. Brick piers on either end of the street level facade may be indicators of masonry construction. The storefront has an altered central entrance which is flanked by display windows. Another pent roof is located where a transom should be. RESEARCH NOTES: The documentation on this building provides as few clues to its origins as its appearance. According to the assessment record an improvement on the property pre-dates 1915. This is confirmed by the Sanborns, which picture the same one-story masonry store in 1907, 1912, and 1928. In the early years it was used as a grocery. T. Purvis owned the property from 1902 to 1918. A change in assessment amounts and parcel configuration in 1935 either indicates that a new improvement replaced the earlier one or that the value was divided among several parcels. The owner from 1929 to 1945 was Lafayette Adams, a grocer whose address in 1924 had been 117 Second.
