Description

No clues to its "as builtw design remain on the facade of this one-story commercial building. Below a metal screened parapet and a horizontal canopy, the storefronts are glazed with modern materials. According to the building permits a feed mixing room and retail store was constructed for $4,500 in 1949 and a new addition in the front of the lot built for $10,000 in 1950. The present appearance of the structure would seem to date from that period. RESEARCH NOTES: The history of this building is confusing. Some accounts (Black, stories of Old Uwland, the Town Center Walking Tour, the Seismic Survey) identify 164 Second as the former Upland Feed and Fuel, established as the Ruedy Feed and Fuel in 1896. However the Sanborns and the directories place the Feed and Fuel at 152. One description indicates the facility had extensive warehouses; it is possible that they may have been located north of 152 although this is not the case on the Sanborns. Building permits issued in 1949 and 1950 (see above) support this scenario. The Sanborns show a blacksmith at this location in 1907 and 1912 and an empty space in 1928. It also appears that the Uwland News plant, labeled llprintingw on the 1907, 1912, and 1928 maps, and given the address "170" (current parcel number 1046-593-06) has been incorporated behind the present facade. In 1928 the Sanborns show a plumber at the rear of 160 and adjoining the feed and fuel; the 1924 directory identifies this as Lutz and Bane, plumbers, at 164. An overhang from the feed and fuel shaded part of the property in 1928. Still more evidence is provided by the Los Anseles Builder and Contractor between December 1912 and February 1913. A fire, which destroyed the Creighton garage, S.T. Lewis store, and Ness livery stable, was reported on December 12, 1913. It was followed by accounts of one-story
