Description

This one-story Queen Anne cottage is remarkably intact. The hipped roof is varied by a gablet at its peak and a front gable over a three-sided bay at the north end of the facade. Staggered shingles face the gable ends, pierced by a circular vent in the gablet and a square vent with a fanciful surround in the front gable. A carved bargeboard and dentils further embellish the gable end. Below it decorative brackets mark the transition to the angled bay. Ornamental paning distinguishes the transom of the central window in the bay; it is flanked by double-hung sash windows. The porch is recessed in the south half of the facade and defined by plain posts with carved brackets. Another doublehung sash window and the entry open off the space. Horizontal siding sheathes the structure, with vertical siding in the frieze zone and below the sill level. No major alterations were noted, and the cottage is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: A year after he bought his parcel from the Harwood Brothers, Henry L. Wheeler had this house built. Wheeler was listed as a builder in the 1900 directory and as a mail carrier in the 1907 edition.
