Description
A porch of rusticated art stone distinguishes this one-and-a-half story Craftsman bungalow. The porch spans the facade, anchored by stone piers which support the overhang of the side gable roof. Centered above the facade, a front gabled dormer contains three small windows which have been re-glazed. Beams and rafters are exposed in the eaves. Wide horizontal siding sheathes the body of the building. The left (north) bay of the porch has been glassed-in. Centered below the dormer, the entry contains a door with a large oval light and a wood-framed screen door. A tripartite window is located to the right (south) of the entry. Alterations include the dormer windows, the partially enclosed porch, and timber roof supports on the south elevation. The house appears to be in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Evidence for the early address and residents and hence the date of construction of this house is somewhat contradictory. Leonard Puehler owned several lots on this block including this parcel between 1907 and 1909. This property was purchased by Emma Confer in 1910 and remained in her hands at least until 1923. The first improvement records kept for the property show a $600 building in 1915. The 1912 Sanborn illustrates a one-story dwelling at "638" which is probably this house. Frank E. Confer, according to the 1911 directory, lived on the east side of Second Avenue, corner F. Clearly this is not the corner house, nor was it in 1911. However, the 1912-13 directory places Confer on Second Avenue, 3 north of F. In 1924 the Confers are shown at 640 yet listed at 626, a non-extant address as far as documents show, in 1919-20 and 1922-23. Frank Confer was the co-proprietor of Confer Bros., purveyor of hay, grain, feed, fuel and poultry supplies on A Street. Emma was his wife. Other relatives at this address were Leslie J. Confer, as student (1924), then an auto mechanic (1926), then a clerk (1928); Nellie Confer, a bookkeeper (1922-23); and Evelyn, a student then also a bookkeeper (1919-20, 1922-23). Frank's profession was listed as a clerk, than salesman beginning in 1919-20.
