Description
This narrow masonry building is contiguous with those to either side. It is one-story and topped by a stuccoed parapet. A 1949 alteration permit may account for the storefront design which features display windows which angle inward towards the bottom. No original facade elements are visible. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record indicates that an improvement on the south 17 112 feet of lot 25 and the north half of lot 26 was first assessed in 1902. Francis M. Clark was the owner. The current legal description is "the south 17 112 feet of lot 25 and the north 6 inches of lot 26." Other than the discrepancy in the description of lot 26 it would appear that this is the same structure. In 1907, 1912, and 1928 the Sanborns illustrated a one-story brick structure. It was labeled as a harness shop in 1907 and 1912 and as a cobbler in 1928. Jacob Kuehny was assessed for the property from 1905 to 1926. The directories list Jacob Kuehny as retired, and Benjamin H. Kuehny as the proprietor of Kuehnyls Harness Shop, featuring harnesses, saddlery, repairing of all kinds, whips, robes, blankets, etc. In 1927 Barbara Kuehny became the assessed owner; the harness shop ceased being listed around 1914. The 1924 directory places Asa E. Tucker, shoe repair, William B. Tucker, real estate, and J.P.C. Norman, watchmaker, at 176 Second Avenue.
