Description

The masonry construction of this one-story commercial building is hidden behind a tall stucco parapet and later brick and glass storefronts. Three storefronts, each with an entry on the north, fill the facade. Glazed doors with transoms over them may be left over from the original building design. No other features appear to pre-date the 1948 storefront alterations noted in the building permit files. RESEARCH NOTES: The 1907, 1912, and 1928 Sanborns all picture a two-story masonry building at 180-190 Second Avenue. In the early years it was used as a hardware and carriage shop and had a tin shop and wagon shed in the rear. By 1928 the uses had changed. A large Lshaped billiard parlor was at 180 and wrapped around a barber shop at 182 while 190 was a grocery. The directories provide names for these enterprises. William MacHenry operated the billiard parlor and was the assessed owner of the building beginning in 1924. Frank C. Mowers ran the barber shop. Henrv ~lindt, whose address was variously given as 182-90 an; 186, w k the grocer, offering in addition to groceries, fruits, vegetables, glassware, kitchenware, china and crockery. Klindt was the property owner from 1916 to 1923. As early as 1900 H. Klindt had been in the hardware business with R. Weiss in North Ontario. A description of their enterprise in the Ontario Observer February 17, 1900, recounted that "the firm keeps on hand a large stock of tinware, galvanized iron, paint, oils, bicycles, gasoline stoves, wire netting, etc. There is also kept a full line of water pipes and fittings, also cutlery, lanterns, ropes, etc." It is not known whether Klindt and Weiss occupied the hardware and carriage shop at this location. Prior to Klindtts ownership of the property, previous owners had included Charles Bence (1911-1915); J.R. Pollack or Park and J.P. Robertson (1908-10); the Imperial Investment Company (1904-07); J.W. Hart (1902-03); and the Magnolia Land and Water Company. The building, if the two stories noted in the Sanborn can be verified on the present structure, was erected between 1901 and 1907.
