Description

The Wells Fargo Bank at the southwest corner of Second and Ninth is the former First National Bank building, much remodeled. Polished granite sheathes the exterior below a stucco parapet. All of the openings have been reglazed. No, hint of the original masonry structure is visible on either the Second Avenue or Ninth Street elevations. The building was remodeled in 1958, according to one source. A building permit for a $17,000 alteration of the exterior was taken out in 1946. RESEARCH NOTES : According to the Upland News of January 13, 1920, the First National Bank was organized in 1906 with A.M. Chaffey, George Chaffey, and H.E. Swan as the principal stockholders. The building was erected at that time. In 1915 Charles V. Barr purchased the Chaffey, Swan and Huntington stock (H.E. Huntington had bought a block of the Chaffey holdings). Barr served as the president of the bank for several years. The building expanded to the south in 1920 after demolition of the former Benson Cash Grocery. This expansion can be traced on the Sanborns which show a restaurant and a cobbler at 193 and 191 Second in 1912 and the footprint of the larger bank in 1928. The remodeling included raising the roof six feet and adding a new cornice. Another addition was made in 1922, this one at the rear, facing Ninth. An office was constructed to accommodate the Magnolia Building and Loan Association (Magnolia Mutual). In 1924 the directory listed the officers and employees of the bank as Charles V. Barr, president; Alvis Podrasnik and R.F. Lemon, vice-presidents; Harlow S. Wilson, cashier; and Allan S. Barr and Clyde Du Vall, assistant cashiers.
