Description

Although this building has been stuccoed, elements of its commercial brick vernacular design can still be "read" on the exterior. One story, the building has a flat roof with remnants of corbeling around the cornice. Below a plain frieze punctured by vents, piers divide the west elevation into three bays and the south elevation into seven bays. Windows within the bays have been re-sized and re-glazed. Recessed panels cap each bay. The primary entrance is located in the central bay facing Second Avenue and has been altered. RESEARCH NOTES: This building was erected in 1925-26 on the site of the Nazarene Church. The church sold the property in 1924 and moved the building to the northwest corner of Ninth Street and Third Avenue. According to a newspaper account of the time, the old site had been sold to the Masons. The assessment record names the purchasers as Fletcher Manker (of Manker and Benson), William Avery (proprietor of the Upland Hotel), and Walter Horak (of the Empire Realty and Mortgage Company). Presumably this trio retained title calling themselves MAH Realty in 1926. The 1928 Sanborn shows the new brick structure housing a grocer and market on the corner (206), with four spaces facing south containing a restaurant (349 E. Ninth), "G.F.G." (35l), notions (353), and an off ice (355) .
