Description
Neoclassical styling distinguishes this one-story commercial
building. Of brick construction, the building is circled by a
high parapet with a denticulated molding at the top. Separating
the parapet from the building, a cornice also wraps the
structure. A portico composed of paired Doric columns which
carry a full entablature and a pediment is centered on the east
elevations. Within the portico the entry is framed by sidelights
and a transom. Two broad windows flank the portico. On the
south elevation, another portico, with single columns, is offset
towards the east. Three windows are located on either side of
the portico, with an additional entry and windows further to the
west. Windows are detailed with raised sills; they have been
reglazed. Overall the building appears largely intact. It is
shaded by mature trees in the parkways on First Avenue and Ninth
Street.
J. B. Draper and Company, ~uneral Directors, erected this building
in 1926. Previously, the two-story house now located at 59 East
Ninth Street had occupied the corner site. Its owner had moved
it to its present site some years earlier. J.B. Draper operated
a mortician and ambulance service, according to the 1926
directory. Apparently the new building was a branch office of a
company already established in Ontario. According to long-time
residents a court house was once operated in the building, a
function peculiarly suited to its Neoclassical style. Today the
building is used as an office.
