Description
Although altered, this one-story cottage retains some of its original Queen Anne features. An L-shaped facade is capped by a cross gable roof. The short leg of the "Ll1 has a cutaway corner occupied by a double-hung sash window and accented by a pendant hanging from the gable. Alternating bands of patterned shingles, including diamond and fishscale, sheathe the gable end below a vertical vent. Presumably a porch has been removed; the entry is now located where the front and side gables meet and is set at right angles to the street. The only window on the side gabled wing appears to be altered. Clapboard sides the residence, which sits behind a picket fence and is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record provides a clear indication that this cottage was built in 1895-96. In the earlier year the lot was owned by Mrs. F.P. Kilbourne and there was an assessment ($40) for land only. The following year John W. Gentry is listed as the owner and a $150 improvement assessment was added. He apparently died around 1900; his heirs are assessed until 1915, after which Mary Gentry alone is cited. The directories from 1900 on include Mrs. Mary Gentry, widow, at First Ave. and 8th St.
